Renowned Bollywood playback singer, Sonu Niigaam Ji, whose songs have been featured in numerous films in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Telugu, is set to perform in Qatar next month at Khalifa Tennis Stadium.
The concert, on February 19, has been organised by Regency Travel and Tours in conjunction with the main sponsors, LG/Jumbo Electronics.
The singer is a particular favourite among the Indian community but is also well loved throughout the sub-continent, and the organisers are expecting that the Asian community in Qatar will turn out in force to see him perform in Qatar again. The organisers said the response to Sonu Ji's past concert in Doha was far greater than expected, so they had to turn people away when the venue was full.
However, this time around the organisers have chosen a venue with a capacity of 7,000 so more people will be able to get the chance to see the star’s performance.
Tickets are priced from QR100 to QR1,000, and purchases entitle the customer to a voucher for LG, with the different categories receiving different amounts.
Tickets will be available tomorrow from all Regency Travel and Tour outlets, all LG/Jumbo electronic outlets, Virgin Megastores at Villagio, Royal Tandoor, Tandoor Express, Bombay Chowpatty, Aryaas restaurant, Khana Khazana restaurant and Garden restaurant.
Niigaam, whose songs feature on the record-breaking film Three Idiots, which is currently showing in cinemas, was chosen because of his huge appeal, according to Regency Travel and Tours general manager, N M Shafiq who claimed that “everyone in Bollywood wants to work with this guy at the moment – he has a very unique voice, and he has performed over 200 concerts around the world with every one of them being a huge hit.”

Director and general manager of Video Home /Jumbo Electronics, C V Rappai mentioned the close relationship between his company and the Regency group, and said that he was “very happy to be working with them again.”

“This is our 30th year here in Qatar,” he said, adding that the concert represents an excellent way to begin the year and that the company are looking forward to other opportunities for similar events in the future.
CEO of Regency Travel and Tours, Tareq Abdullatif Taha explained that the concert was part of the company’s ongoing commitment to involvement within the community in Qatar, whether related to arts, sports or other cultural events.

The company is also planning to bring out other musicians who may appeal to different communities here.
“This is just the start this year,” he said, adding “there will be many more events to help us keep networking with all communities at a high level.”

Exclusive Video of the iconic "Phir Mile Sur" featuring Sonu Niigaam Ji

Zoom recreates the iconic national song for young India on Republic Day, January 26 from 7 am

Circa  Aug 15th 1988, “Mile Sure Mera Tumhara” - The iconic song was premiered on Doordarshan and instantly became India’s beloved melody. It featured many national icons of the time, including, Amitabh Bachchan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Kamal Hassan, Balamurlikrishna, Lata Mangeshkar, Prakash Padukone just to a name a few.

“Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” showcased the diversity of India to establish its message of unity. The song captivated and enthralled every Indian and an entire generation vividly recalls the iconic opening lines sung by Bharat Ratna Shri Pt. Bhimsen Joshi.

‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ was conceptualized & conceived by the late Suresh Mullick of of O & M Advertising.

Today, the message of the song and its concept are as relevant. Zoom has therefore conceived and produced the Phir Mile Sur project which is an initiative of The Times of India Group and Vodafone Essar. Arti and Kailash Surendranath have once again recreated their magic with Phir Mile Sur. Other associates involved with this project include Kingfisher Airlines, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces and Radio City 91.1 FM.

Phir Mile Sur was appropriately launched on the eve of Republic Day, at a grand event at the Taj Land’s End, Mumbai. The film was released at the hands of legendary, Mr Amitabh Bachchan in the presence of many other celebrities and dignitaries.

More than 60 of India’s icons have lent their support to this initiative which has taken almost a year to create. It took more than 60 days of on-location shoot, across 15 cities of India, 30 days of post production, 22 of India’s biggest superstars, 18 of India’s best musicians, 13 of India’s best artists and singers, 15 of India’s most renowned icons to create this magnum opus. Each artist speaks of a cause and the video is shot at places which have historical value and significance.

Zoom creates content roadblock with Phir Mile Sur – The Song of India on 26 January starting 7am. Zoom’s partner network, Times Now will also air the program several times starting 26th January. Zoom has also given airing rights of the iconic song to all major TV and Radio networks in the country. Doordarshan with all its kendras is also expected to air the program.

Accentuating the need of the hour and further re-enforcing the initiatives of the Group, MD – Times Group, Vineet Jain, added “In the face of any issue, the nation has always looked to its leaders, its icons and its media to show them the way.

And we at Times Group have always taken pride in supporting change through positive re-enforcement  using  our mediums of news and infotainment which is why, when Zoom produced Phir Mile Sur using celebrities and music to culturally unify the youth of the nation, the Group fully supported this endeavor.

The song is like an alternative anthem and a rediscovery for todays younger demographic. An important lesson in harmony and unity using popular culture, in a trying time. We are proud to re-present Phir Mile Sur!”

Speaking on their association with the project, Mr. Marten Pieters, Managing Director & CEO, Vodafone Essar, said, “Phir Mile Sur captures the true spirit of contemporary India and will hopefully also resonate with new generations. As a responsible company, being part of this society, we are delighted to support this commendable endeavour.”

Phir Mile Sur has a freshness that reflects the enthusiasm of modern India, a tune and lyrics that every Indian today can relate to and which would further ignite the passion for India and its diversity. The languages are many, however Phir Mile Sur speaks a common and universal language - that of love for the motherland and its people.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr Kailash Surendranath from Kailash Picture Company said, “It has been an incredible journey creating ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ which was a mosaic of so many different personalities from various walks of life and regions in India. Today, we feel the same emotions gushing, after a span of two decades. So many things have changed in India - growth, prosperity, the economic scenario, however, as citizens of this wonderfully diverse country, our feelings for India have only grown stronger and we hope that Phir Mile Sur will further strengthen this bond. ”

With more than 40 million viewers, Zoom is the destination for young India, says Suresh Bala, CEO of Zoom.  Besides, Zoom is also India’s dominant Bollywood infotainment channel. And Bollywood has the greatest impact and influence on young India. These two features along with our Times Group pedigree make Zoom the perfect home for Phir Mile Sur.

He further added, “When we first conceived the project we found it daunting. But once again the biggest names of Bollywood, the music world, sports stars, regional superstars, all came forward to make this happen. We are deeply indebted to each and every one of them for their selfless contribution towards this project. I sincerely believe that young India will embrace this song and make it their own”

Sonu Niigaam Ji sings for "Show It Off"

2010 has now begun to roll out before us and the possibilities are endless and exciting. People are starting to plot and plan the takeover and I'm having more meetings than Obama. I am currently speaking to three big names on the U.K. Bhangra scene to organize a unique live event. It's going to be called Alchemy Presents Desi Live. Full live band, three, yes three headliners, and more audio power than a thousand Metallica gigs. That's how we roll in 2010. If you can get to London on April 8 then make sure you don't miss this event..

By now you must be thinking that's cool but what about my Urban Desi news?  What's happening in the U.K.? Well last Tuesday I caught up with the beautiful and talented Amar. She came and gave me two exclusive tracks from her forthcoming album "Show It Off" which is due out in February in India on Universal Records. The first track called "Bombay Billionaire," featuring a certain singer called Sonu Niigaam Ji, is amazing, "the Indian Justin Timberlake." "He's a real thinker, he takes everything really seriously." While she was in India recording with Sonu, the press couldn't help but suggest romance. Amar found the whole experience a bit bizarre. The track itself is pure Hindi Hop with Sonu dropping some English vocals into the mix. Amar's vocal delivery is quickfire like Kardinal Offishall's and sultry like Beyonce's as she switched styles. The second track that I was given of Amar's was called "Sajana" and is a much more down tempo love song designed to show that she's not just for the clubs. I really did try to plead with Amar to have the full album plus some of the tracks she has recorded with Timbaland for his "Shock Value 2" remix album, but as much as I pleaded she promised me the exclusives in all good time. I know I'm greedy because she had already given me two massive world firsts. She said to me "I'm so excited you're playing the tracks, I've been tweeting about it all day."

Enjoy!!

Sonu Niigaam Ji : Rahman and I share an ehsaas

Here's an exclusive interview of the versatile and the noted singer of Bollywood Sonu Niigaam Ji
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I die each time I perform on stage
Yet nothing can match the ‘ecstasy’ of performing live for Sonu. “The idea is to shock people. I keep innovating. Recently, I paid a tribute to Michael Jackson performing the Billie Jean number and even did the moonwalk,” he recalls. “For the period of two to three hours that
I am on stage, I die. I cease to exist. I don’t itch, I don’t feel hungry and I don’t feel the urge to go to the loo either. The only thing I need is water because my throat goes dry. My wife, my child, my parents, my career cease to exist then. It’s just a feeling of being suspended. Being on stage gives me an orgasmic high.” And then he adds esoterically, “Orgasm is death after all.”

The rollercoaster can kill you
Sonu explains why he has deliberately weaned away from playback singing. “I don’t want to depend on anything to the extent that when you don’t have it you are devastated. The same happens in love. I learnt the lesson that one should not love anyone so much that he or she breaks you down. It’s the same with your career. You get so involved with it, you forget that there’s a life beyond. If there is a high, the downslide is certain too. The rollercoaster can kill you. So I changed my path and withdrew into a shell,” he explains. Pausing, he adds,“I had problems in my personal life too. It’s then that I started living alone for a while. I went to the Himalayas for a week and enjoyed the isolation. I told myself, ‘One fine day you will find that your singing has gone obsolete and girls are no longer falling over you and you have neither learnt anything nor seen life from any other perspective’.”

Rahman and I share a silence, an ehsaas
So Sonu deliberately ‘hiked’ his price to distance himself. “Instead of doing 50 songs a month I decided to do just two songs. The rest of the time I wanted to spend in silence and in seeking who I am,” he says adding, “Music composers today have understood that money lies in events. So they have either started singing songs themselves or giving songs to
those who will perform in their shows. The entire game has changed. Composers come to me only for special songs, barring a few like Sajid-Wajid, Shantanu Moitra and A R Rahman with whom I have worked consistently.” Interestingly, Sonu and Rahman, both dubbed as soul-searchers, are not really comrades in conversation. “We share a silence of sorts. He knows that I know what he knows. He is quite like me — detached from things. We meet each other cordially, we do the song and I leave. We don’t connect via emails or talk on the phone. I think it’s good this way. Rahman and I just share an ehsaas (feeling),” Sonu decodes the equation.

The Lions Gold Awards is in its 16th year. What's special this time around?
The 16th Lions Gold Awards are really special for us because it is the first time Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra and Dharmendra will be attending. Your awards are unique because instead of private pockets, the proceeds go to charity.
Yes. All the funds raised through sponsorship of the event will be donated to our Senior Citizens Home at Karjat, which is a cause connected to our heart.

See, we have lots of permanent and ongoing projects like providing shelter for the poor, classrooms for villagers, etc. We also organize cataract surgery camps for people who can't afford it. The money from the annual awards is used for this.

There seems to be a long list of Bollywood celebs in attendance this year.
Yes. Besides Mr. Amitabh Bachchan; Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, Omi Vaidya (of 3 Idiots fame), Sonu Niigaam Ji, Sharman Joshi, Mahie Gill, Govinda, Madhur Bhandarkar, Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher, Salim - Sulaiman and others have confirmed attendance.

How are the awards different from other industry awards?
Unlike nominations and a jury in case of the other awards, ours is a declared award based of voting by 46 thousand members of our Lions Multiple (group).

The 92 years young, Lions International is spread across 205 countries and the Lions Club of Sole Mumbai, which is organizing the awards, is ISO 9002:2009 certified. It's also the second largest club in the world.

You have a Green theme for the awards this year.
We have adapted the 'Go Green' theme this year because we are worried about global warming. All our projects and 300 clubs have stopped using plastic bags and religiously following it.

Enjoy!!

Sonu Niigaam Ji at the music launch of upcoming movie Striker

The Music Of Striker Finally Releases
Siddarth, one of the most popular South heroes, who recently won several accolades for his role in Rang De Basanti is all set to play the role of a carrom player in his upcoming sport film Striker. South actress Padmapriya has been paired with Siddharth in Striker by director Chandan Arora.

Set in the 1980s, the film will move through a labyrinth of socio-cultural political issues as seen through the eyes of the slum-protagonist. Entitled Striker, the film's main protagonist Siddharth's character will be based on the life and times of a real-life carrom whiz from the slums of Malavni named Suryakant.

Siddharth, who has said a firm no to several good offers from Mumbai including Rakeysh Mehra's Delhi 6 and David Dhawana's film for UTV, has quietly been preparing for the new challenge.

A carrom player from the outset, Siddharth has been polishing up his skills.

Siddharth has become an expert at carom. By the time we hit the floors in December Siddharth will be able to beat anyone at the game. He has met the real-life Suryakant several times. He has also spent sizeable time in Malavni getting the feel of the place. Though he functions from the south he has spent a large part of his life in Delhi and Mumbai. So he speaks very fluent Hindi,Arora told IANS.

Unlike Dharavi, which is a planned slum, Malavni just happened. People and communities from all across Mumbai who were rendered homeless just converged on this slum. So to begin with, it was more a refugee camp than a slum, said Arora.

But the game of carrom will preside over the goings-on, just as it does in the slum. Lakhs of rupees go into betting over the game. Carrom is a way of life in Malavni, explained Arora.

The rest of the vast cast is now being worked out. But Vidya Malvade from Chak De India, model Nicolette Bird and south Indian actress Padma Priya have been finalised.

So after Chak De India and Goal, get ready for another sports film next year. Hope it does as well, if not better than Chak De India...

Guests present at the event were Sonu Niigaam Ji, Siddharth Narayan, Shweta Salve, Anupam Kher, Aditya Pancholi at Striker Music Launch in Taj Land  End, Bandra, Mumbai on 12th Jan 2010.

It pays to be healthy -- Sonu Niigaam Ji

Sonu Niigaam Ji's impressive range and versatility as a singer have ensured him a permanent place in music directors’ list of favourite artistes. His lovable rendition of ‘Zoobi Doobi’ (3 Idiots) has been a unanimous hit, proving once again that despite the dwindling numbers of his Bollywood tracks per year, he remains as popular as ever.

We caught up with Sonu Ji about his upcoming Bollywood songs, acting assignments, His next album and His message to aspiring singers.

On His Bollywood projects…
I’ve sung one song in Mani Ratnam’s Ravana.  I don’t remember the exact lyrics as I had sung it long ago. Nevertheless, I had a fantastic time crooning the song; it’s always been great working with A R Rahman. Besides this, I have no Bollywood film in the pipeline.

On His acting assignments…
Acting offers keep pouring in but I don’t want to sign anything just for the sake of it. I want to do something meaningful, artistic, satisfying and something that’s beyond commercial-value. Recently, two projects have fascinated me but they are still at a scripting stage so I’m still uncertain about them.

On regional music…
I have been working in regional cinema from a very long time now. I had a wonderful experience singing in different languages, and so far I have received overwhelming response for my regional songs. Recently, I released my Kannada album Neene Bari Neena. It has music by Mano Murthy and has become quite popular amongst the youth.

On reality shows…
I think reality shows have become a big platform for budding singers. While that is good, I feel I have no right to comment on them.

On his favourite music…
I feel music lovers should keep experimenting with all sorts of music. If you ask me, I love listening to all genres of music. But preferably, I enjoy listening to Indian classical, world music and Jazz.

On His next album…
Yes, I’m doing an album and the work is in the process.  I won’t be able to divulge many details.

On His favourite contemporary singers…
I like Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Kunal Ganjawala and Kailash Kher’s style of singing.

On fitness…
I always like to be fit and I think it’s important to live a healthy life. I think other singers too have realised the importance of fitness. Moreover, it also increases your stamina which ultimately helps you in singing.

His message to young singers…
I think playback singing is not the only form of singing and the younger lot of generation should think of other avenues like live performances, forming a band, classical concerts etc.

Sonu Niigaam Ji recorded the Big Fm jingle in multiple languages

Big FM has begun the new year with a brand new jingle, that furthers the station's positioning of ‘Suno Sunao Life Banao’. Big FM brand ambassador Sonu Niigaam Ji has rendered vocals for the new sound composed by Ranjit Barot. The jingle began airing on 1 January 2010.

The earlier jingle sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu Niigaam Ji was replaced by the new sound on the first day of the year. Commenting on the new jingle, Big FM Senior VP Programming Nirupam Sonu says, “We introduced the new jingle across our markets on 1 January. Each station has three moods of jingles to be played at different parts of the day- morning, afternoon and evening. Also, we have composed jingles that suit the format adopted by the particular station.”

“For our Bangalore station which has a High CHR (Contemporary High Radio) format, we have a jingle with high tempo but in easy CHR format stations like Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi we have jingles with soothing low tempos. The jingles have been recorded in all languages including Dongri, Assamese, Tamil, Punjabi, Malayalam, Hindi to be played across our networks and all these versions are crooned by Sonu Niigaam.,” he explains.

Sonu Ji mentions that Big FM is planning a 360 degree campaign to promote its new 'stationality'. “We would be building properties around it by conducting on air contests revolving the new stationality and divert the listeners to our website for downloading the jingle as a ringtone.”  The station would soon be putting out television commercials featuring its brand ambassador Sonu Niigaam Ji to promote the new jingle.

The new sound of Big FM is part of its music positioning announced in September with Sonu Niigaam Ji as its brand ambassador. Big FM Senior Vice President – Marketing Anand Chakravarthy had earlier mentioned that around Rs. 10 million would be spent on the first phase of a multi media campaign that includes radio, outdoor, online, mobile and print. TVC, part of the second phase of the campaign will soon be rolled out by the radio network.

So guys, enjoy the new tune of the Big 92.7 Fm.. Suno Sunao Life Banao...

Cheers!!

Sonu Niigaam Ji's huge success with 3 Idiots sound track

It is undeniable that "3 Idiots" is a huge success. In fact, not only has hit made box-office history in India, but it has caught on with the western world as well. In the U.K., the U.S. and Australia, the movie has grossed more than any other Bollywood film, including star packed movies like "Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham." In Australia "3 Idiots" competes with the high budget movie "Avatar." So how can this success be explained?
Aamir Khan has truly created a reputation for himself, and with his selective nature, people only expect the best films and an amazing performance from him. This follows true in "3 Idiots" Each actor played their role remarkably well, making such a moving story believable. Director Rajkumar Hirani also deserves a pat on the back for his work.

And the music was already catching on with fans as the tunes are catchy and each vocalist amazing! However, after seeing the movie, or hearing the story of "3 Idiots," the lyrics of the songs makes more sense. Now the music is climbing the charts and the vocals are all feeling the love from the fans.

Sonu Niigaam Ji sings "Aal Izz Well," "Jaane Nahin Denge," and "Zoobi Doobi" for this film. He has had great feedback from his fans and took to his Facebook page to thank them, "Hi all.. Thank you for your appreciation for my songs in 3 Idiots. It's overwhelming to see lots of my good work out and loved this year. Patience and integrity does bear fruits. lots of love - Sonu."

"3 Idiots" is a great movie for the end of the year for all those who were involved in the project, as well as for all those who have watched it and enjoyed it. With the bar set so high for films as we move into 2010, we hope that this caliber of work remains in Bollywood.
